Hong Kong Architecture 1946-2015: from colonial to global

中国人写英文书，对在外国浸淫大学本科的年轻人来说大概不难，但对我这样老来才开始英文写作的人，则总是难。

2006年，我的英文书 Building a Revolution: Chinese architecture since 1980 出版，那本书，投稿审阅修改搞了好几年，内容定了，文稿是几位外国人先后修改的，这本书10 年后还有人购买阅读引用，感谢香港大学出版社对我的培育。World Architecture in China, 2010 年出版。那本书是别人根据我的内容改写，写的像外国记者的笔法，我对这种做法并不赞同。

香港建筑的书，从繁体版起步，第二步到简体版，英文版接受过几家的审阅，收到许多批评建议意见，使得英文版从简体版上跨出一步，结构紧扣我所框定的三个阶段。前言把为什么在某阶段要注意这些内容、特点何在、香港建筑的意义都说了，要有什么理论，都在前言里，而各章节则写那一类的建筑类型和实例。 每一章都有结论，这样便于总结该章。

在每一章的最后，我加了段个人的经历，personal encounter. 如写公屋的，就写我走近公屋的所见和感想，写 “从上海到香港” 的那批建筑师，我则描写上海外滩到工务局，陆谦受一路上大概看到些什么。写到“国际化”的，则写我1989 年第一次从上海到香港，看见的都市景象如何让我惊讶。写作者总是有一个平台的，他站在什么地方什么角度看，如何去感受，以什么为评判标准等等，在这里都表露了。这种书不是博士论文，可以写的更加人情化些。

大部分比较像样的英文出版社，都有审稿一环。如果是大学出版社，一般要全书盲评审稿。一般的，至少要看2-3章。衷心感谢审稿人的支持和鼓励，这本书可以通过 Springer 出版公司走向英语读者。Springer 公司是出版科学和社会科学书籍的百年老店，1999年出版了Frampton 和张钦楠先生联合主编的 “20世纪世界建筑拼图”，一套丛书10几本，影响很大。

目前，世界上有一万多家大学和研究机构订阅 Springer Link。你只要在这个大学的网上，就可下载Springer 的大部分图书和期刊，包括本书。 Springer 的书，已经规定了尺寸，16.6 x 24cm, 封面有4个版式供挑选，然后作者提供一张图，我挑了现在这个式样，给了张高楼的图。封面字体大小，内页的字体段落大小、插图文字的标点符号，都是固定的，章节次序、参考文献格式也是按照公司的规定，作者只需跟从。

一般的作者，喜欢将“文艺的” 标题作为主标题，From Colonial to Global 原来是主标题， 但编辑希望主标题直截了当，这样在网上搜索比较容易找到。Hong Kong Architecture 1946-2015 就成了主标题。我在谷歌和亚马逊网站试了下，果然如此。 进入编辑后，一切按网上程序进行，非常迅速，和国际学术期刊的编辑过程相似。

香港建筑简体版从交稿到成书，用了6个多月。这本书篇幅更大，却只用了3个多月。这本书的文稿编辑在日本，排版在印度，最后的书是从德国海德堡寄出的。至于学术书的印刷数量，现在 Routledge 等初版都在200-300本左右，港大出版社过千的印数也不多，教材则例外。国际性的出版社，现在都志在电子版。Springer 采用 Print to order, 有人订购他才印。而这种学术书的定价，实在是不想让个人购买，我上网查看，价钱在每个国家都不同。 虽然现在学术书在网上看的多，但网上版和一本纸本书感觉还是不一样。如果贵校和贵单位的图书馆要购置图书，不妨推荐一下吧。
